The Temple of Deep Time

The Temple of Deep Time

Art installation in a corn crib, Silverwood County Park, Dane County Parks, WI

Time-lapse night photography of the art installation, 2013

I won a commission to create an art installation in one of ten corn cribs at Silverwood. With the help of Al Jewer and John Steines, I created an installation interpreting the geologic sense of deep time, and how things always change, decay, and erode through time, even on the short scale of perennials history. The installation uses recycled barn wood to fence in the corn crib, with old farm machinery wired to the crib walls, and spiral sections of oak trees from the farm that had been struck by lightning in the past. Several laser-engraved placards are placed around the crib, as symbols and commentary. There is a solar-powered system that plays tracks of my original recorded music, and randomly generates a laser light show while the music plays.

There were originally ten different installations in the row of corn cribs, meant to be in place for one year. After that year, my installation was honored by being one of two chosen to remain in place indefinitely.
